My Definitive Guide for Boys on What to Wear for Senior Photos

Your senior photos are a reflection of your personality and style, so it’s important to choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Here are some tips to help you look and feel your best during your shoot.

Before we start, I generally try not to be overly prescriptive in my outfit advice because everyone has a different taste and their own unique style. I also don’t want to overwhelm you either. The biggest takeaway here is to keep it simple and timeless. The most important thing is that you feel confident in what you’re wearing.

1. Keep It Comfortable

The most important thing is to wear something that makes you feel like yourself. If you’re uncomfortable or constantly adjusting your outfit, it’ll show in your photos. Pick clothes that fit well and let you move naturally. Your confidence will shine through when you feel comfortable.

2. Classic Looks Never Go Out of Style

For a timeless look, stick to classic pieces that you won’t cringe at in 10 years. Think well-fitted jeans, a button-up shirt, or a simple t-shirt paired with a jacket. Solid colors and simple patterns like stripes or checks always photograph well and stay stylish over time.

Avoid sweatpants at all costs.

3. Layering Adds Depth

Layers can elevate a casual look. For example, you could wear a flannel or denim jacket over a t-shirt or a blazer over a button-down shirt. Modern shirt jacket are amazing.

Not only does this make your outfit look more dynamic, but it also gives you options. You can remove the jacket or sweater for a quick wardrobe change during your session.

4. Footwear

Shoes can tie an outfit together. Make sure your footwear matches the overall vibe you’re going for. Clean sneakers, casual boots, or loafers work great. Try to avoid overly worn or dirty shoes, as they can be distracting in your photos. Make sure whatever you choose is comfortable since you’ll be moving around during the shoot. Lastly, avoid white tube socks.

5. Avoid Large Logos and Distracting Graphics

While graphic tees can be fun, it’s better to avoid them for your senior photos. Large logos, brand names, or overly bold patterns can draw attention away from your face and make the images feel less timeless. Stick to simpler designs or solid colors.

6. Consider the Location

Think about where your photoshoot will take place. If you’re shooting in nature, like a park or beach, earth tones and casual outfits will complement the setting. For urban locations, you might want a more polished look with darker tones, like a jacket or well-fitted pants.

  • Beach or Waterfront: Soft pastels, whites, and blues work well for a calm, serene look at beaches or lakes. Lighter shades complement the sandy or watery tones.
  • Natural Locations (Parks, Forests, Lakes): Earthy tones like olive green, mustard yellow, and soft pastels look great in nature. Jewel tones like deep burgundy, emerald green, and navy blue also pop beautifully against the natural greenery. An all black or white dress is always a great go-to classic.
  • Urban Settings (Downtown, Graffiti Walls, City Streets): Bold colors like red, cobalt blue, or even black can create a striking contrast against city backdrops. Neutrals like white, gray, and black also look chic in urban settings.

7. Grooming

Along with your outfit, take a little time to make sure you’re well-groomed. A fresh haircut a few days before your shoot can help you look sharp. If you have facial hair, trim it to your preferred style. Bring along any hair products or a comb for touch-ups during the shoot.

8. Bring a Few Options

If you’re unsure which look will work best, bring a couple of outfit options to your session. A casual outfit and a slightly more dressed-up option will give you variety in your photos. I can help you decide what looks best for the setting and lighting.

9. Stay True to Yourself

Ultimately, your senior photos should reflect who you are at this moment in your life. Choose outfits that make you feel good and represent your personality. Whether you’re more into relaxed styles or a sharp, tailored look, wear what feels most “you.”

10. Wear to Shop
