If you’re dreaming of a winter wonderland for your engagement photos, Gold Creek Pond is one of the most breathtaking locations in Washington State. Tucked away in the Snoqualmie Pass, this serene alpine lake transforms into a snow-covered paradise during the winter months.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful engagement session at Gold Creek Pond with Anikka & Connor. Since they are recent transplants to the Seattle area, their goal was to feature everything that is unique and beautiful about living in the Pacific Northwest. With fresh snow blanketing the ground and the entire pond frozen solid, we had the rare opportunity to take photos while walking on the ice. The result? A gallery of images filled with dreamy, snow-dusted moments that look straight out of a fairytale.

If you’re considering Gold Creek Pond for your winter engagement session, here are five essential tips to ensure a smooth and unforgettable experience:
Tips for a Winter Engagement Session at Gold Creek Pond
- Dress Warmly and in Layers – While winter engagement photos look stunning, the cold temperatures can be intense. Opt for stylish yet warm outfits, including thermal layers, wool coats, and cozy accessories like scarves and gloves. Neutral and jewel tones stand out beautifully against the snowy backdrop.
- Bring Proper Footwear – The snow and ice at Gold Creek Pond can be deep and slippery. Wear insulated, waterproof boots with good traction to keep your feet warm and dry. If you want to wear elegant shoes for a few photos, bring them in a bag and switch when needed. I also recommend bringing snowshoes to help walking in deep snow. REI rents them for about $30 per day for each rental.
- Check Road and Weather Conditions – Winter weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Always check the road conditions on Snoqualmie Pass before heading out, and be prepared for snow-covered roads. A vehicle with all-wheel drive and snow chains is highly recommended. To be honest, I would reschedule your photo shoot if the conditions are dubious. It’s not worth the risk.
- Bring a Foldable Wagon – Gold Creek Pond is only accessible by short walk from the main access road that runs parrallel to I-90. I suggest bringing a foldable wagon to carry items like change of clothes, shoes, or champagne since it will be difficult to carry all that stuff by hand. The wagon has not only been clutch in many of my engagement sessions but it’s been handy in many other situations. I don’t know how I ever lived without one. You can get one off Amazon for around $100. Look for Black Friday sales.
- Time It Right for the Best Light and Avoiding crowd– In winter, the days are shorter, and the sun stays lower in the sky, creating soft, flattering light. Scheduling your session during golden hour—either in the morning or late afternoon—will give you the most magical glow against the snowy landscape (assuming it’s a sunny day). Also, in the late afternoon the crowds empty out. For Anikka and Connor’s engagement session, we pretty much had the whole park to ourselves.
- Get a Sno-Park Pass – Absolutely critical to get a Sno-Park Pass. Since you will have to park on the access road running parallel to I-90, you will need a Non-Motorized Sno-Park pass to park. Otherwise you will be ticketed. The park ranger truck continually treks up and down the road issuing tickets like candy.
With the right preparation, a winter engagement session at Gold Creek Pond can be a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand across the icy lake or wrapped in a cozy embrace with snowy peaks behind you, the setting provides the perfect backdrop for capturing your love story.
